Ode to a Treadmill

February 2, 2020

CrocodileI once made friends with a crocodile
I’ve patted a porcupine
But the stationary treadmill
Is not a pal of mine

It stands there very quietly
It doesn’t make a sound
It’s well aware I’m creeping past
It knows when I’m around

It’s not that I’m afraid of it
Quite the opposite in fact
I find it very boring
So bland I can’t react

TreadmillI stand upon its thin black mat
And push the knob to ‘Go’
I daren’t try for ‘rabbit’
So pick ‘turtle’ to start slow

I walk and walk but never leave
The room below the stairs
For treadmills never take you far
Unless they catch you unawares

They can trip you up quite quickly
You stumble and you fall
But the treadmill keeps on turning
As you bounce against the wall

Yet I return to try again
Every single night
For no machine will daunt me
In this never-ending fight

PorcupineFor I once patted a porcupine
I’ve made friends with crocodiles
So on this stupid treadmill
I vow to walk a thousand miles

Love your poem!! Treadmills are sooooo boring. That’s why, even in winter, I walk with my friend. We don’t get to walk every day, but it helps to get out into the fresh air and gets some exercise without boring myself to tears. 😉

I agree. My husband and I try to get out for a walk most days, but when its icy or too windy (or there’s just too much snow piled up along the roadway), its impossible. I’ll do just about anything to avoid using the treadmill!

Excellent poem! I had my husband install a book holder on our home treadmill so that I can walk and read. That sure makes the time pass more quickly! At the gym, I use a recumbent bike for the same reason!

I’m not sure I could walk and read at the same time. LOL! I might try it, though. I tried watching TV a long time ago but found I got doubly bored! Music sometimes helps but I really, really just want winter over so I can get outdoors to walk.

LOL love it! The day the gym got treadmills that had a video screen on it which allowed you to pretend to be running beautiful trails, I lost my aversion. That said, I still prefer trails to treadmill.

I do it at home; maybe I could rig up my laptop and run some nature trail videos! I’ve tried music and watching TV but it doesn’t do much for me. Unfortunately, I can’t walk outdoors in winter around here, so its the treadmill or nothing!
