What’s on YOUR ‘Back to School’ List?

August 13, 2014

CondomsYou know you’re getting old when you’re taken aback to see Trojan condoms listed as one of the ‘essential’ Back to School health and beauty products in this week’s WalMart e-flyer. (Better ‘safe’ than sorry, I suppose.)

I guess this is just another reminder that I’m on … the other side of 55.

I just came across this post and was immediately struck with the warped idea that the “essential back-to-school condoms” get replaced in late spring with the “essential summer break condoms.”

I found a photo online from 2012. It shows a promotion for Back to School items, and under the Back to School sign is a rack of President’s Choice knives. Pretty funny photo, really, though some of the comments from readers didn’t see anything funny about it.

Obviously not a lot of thought went into signage in either of these cases.

I think pretty much anything that’s ‘on sale’ in late August is considered a ‘back to school’ sale item! Whoever designs signage and flyers needs to (re)take Marketing 101.

What? That’s horrible. What grade was this, not elementary, I hope?

It was ‘Back to Campus’ (I think; I deleted it soon after I saw it). I don’t think anyone really thought about what they were listing – they just picked the items that were on sale that week (it was under ‘Cosmetics and Beauty Products’) and headed it up as ‘Back to School’.

Oh, good grief! Don’t get me started on this one. :-O

I had the same reaction I get whenever I see ads for ‘feminine hygiene products’ on TV. Really? Do we need to advertise this way?

      • August 14, 2014 11:51 am

I’m with you 100%. Is NOTHING private anymore??

      • August 14, 2014 11:58 am

Nope – absolutely, positively NOT. Our saturated media world has resulted in EVERYTHING being ‘in your face’ 100% of the time. This is NOT a better way!

    Seriously? Oh my!

    • August 13, 2014 4:20 pm

Yup – it was under ‘health and beauty products’ in the ‘back to school essentials’ eflyer that arrived in my inbox today.

Really. Well, I’m so old I haven’t been born yet. Did they slip in any Depends in that Back to School flyer? 😀 😀 😀

    • August 13, 2014 1:59 pm

I have to think they were targeting college-aged ‘back to schoolers’.

      • August 13, 2014 4:32 pm

I guess so but all kinds of other school kids are going back to school as well. Sigh.

      • August 13, 2014 5:07 pm

Honestly, I think this sort of thing is just so ‘common’ in today’s culture and in the media, etc., that no one thinks its inappropriate to advertise it anytime and anywhere (remember when ads for such things were only shown after 10:00 pm?!?!?!? Now you see them on all stations at all hours of the day!)

      • August 13, 2014 8:09 pm

        Double sigh. Anything goes now.:-(

  7. August 13, 2014 12:54 pm

    That’s quite a back-to-school flyer!

    • August 13, 2014 1:58 pm

I did a double-take when I saw the Trojan label in amongst the other items.

  8. August 13, 2014 12:48 pm

lol! Yeah, that’s a bit too much to list as a back to school item.

    • August 13, 2014 1:57 pm

I can only assume it was meant as part of their ‘back to college’ collection! Sure took me by surprise!
